Durham County Council visit
On the 16th of February 2016, Keith Corbett Operations Director of Infinite Learning and Development (ILD), was invited to Durham County Hall to deliver a presentation to the Economy and Enterprise Overview and Scrutiny Committee, who are conducting a review of skills development within DCC.
Following the presentation, members of the council requested a visit to the Welding Academy and Learning Centre of Light to observe first-hand how ILD had worked with Caterpillar and some of their suppliers to address a regional shortage of skilled welders.
The aim of the review is to investigate and understand the role and performance of DCC in supporting skills development within County Durham, examining how it works in partnership, any gaps in current skills support provision and identify future skill priorities for the County.
11 members of the committee (including members of the DCC council) took a tour of both training facilities and met senior management from Caterpillar Production, HR and the apprentice Team Leader. There was an extensive question and answer session where members of the committee clarified how the partnership between Caterpillar and ILD had worked to fill the skills gap and why it had proved to be so successful.
It was highlighted by Caterpillar that this model works because ILD are delivering training specific to the requirements of an employer and that this model could be adapted for use in other sectors.
Members of the committee thanked ILD and Caterpillar for the visit and that it had been extremely interesting, and the information gained would help them develop their plans with regards to supporting skills development in the county.
